Sylvester Wells
Born in Jacksonville, FL in 1938, Sylvester Wells. He was interested in art from a young age and came upon Alfred Hair by chance when he witnessed Hair selling art out of his trunk at the age of 25. Prior to meeting Hair, Sylvester Wells was already painting and selling portraits but after learning of Hairs success was convinced to switch over to landscapes. He learned to paint by watching Harold and Sam Newton and sold his door as the other Highwaymen did; door to door and out of his car trunk. His work is featured in the Smithsonian Museum of African American History and Culture https://nmaahc.si.edu/object/nmaahc_2014.185.3ab He passed away in 2023 after spending his final years devoted to Bible study and ministry. |
