Sam Newton

Florida Highwaymen Featured Artist

Sam Newton

Sam Newton was born in 1953 in Georgia. He states that he wants to be known as an individual artist rather than a Highwaymen because he does not agree with the Florida Highwaymen group name because it was invented after the passing of his brother Harold Newton who was the co-founder of the group. He moved to Gifford, FL after hearing of his brother Harold’s success in painting and quickly learned how to paint and joined the operation. Rodney Demps stated that Sam Newton had a lot of energy having the ability fry fish and paint simultaneously. Sam sold and supported his family entirely through his art even throughout the decades that most other Highwaymen were not. Sam was also not a fan of the fast-painting style and focused one being a better painter rather than a salesman.
