Florida Highwaymen Featured Artist
Rodney Demps
Rodney Demps was born in 1953 in Fort Pierce, FL. Although he never went on the road to sell his paintings like the other Florida Highwaymen he had the same grade school art teacher; Zanobia Jefferson. It was Jefferson who introduced Rodney Demps to the father of the Florida Highwaymen movement A.E. Backus. After meeting Backus he was connected to Alfred Hair who he made frames for and painted backdrops and skies for as a teenager. Later in his life he recieved a Master of Education from Florida A&M University and also served in the U.S. Marine Corps as an officer. He is known as the surrealist Highwaymen because of his unique and abstract style of painting landscapes. Rodney Demps passed away on June 17, 2020. |
