Florida Highwaymen Featured Artist
Livingston Roberts
Livingston Roberts was born in 1942 in Elkton, FL. Having interest and practice in painting since a child, he moved to his grandmothers house in Fort Pierce in the 50s and met Alfred Hair and A.E. Backus. He improved his painting skill by observing Backus in the studio. He sold his paintings on the road, alone or with his brother Ernest Roberts. Livingston is considered by Highwaymen Al Black to have been the best painter of the group. Black famously said that Roberts paintings would “sell themselves.” Original members such as James Gibson, cited Livingston Roberts as being one of his inspirations. His backyard was a gathering place for the Highwaymen and other art enthusiasts who came to watch him paint or simply hang out. He is one of the most accomplished and detailed Florida Highwaymen painters and passed away in 2004. |
