John Maynor

Florida Highwaymen Featured Artist

John Maynor

John Maynor was born in Springfield, GA in 1948. His family moved to Ft Pierce, FL in the late 50s where he met the founding members of the Florida Highwaymen. He credits Sam Newton and Livingston Roberts as being his most prominent teachers and he sold art on the side of highways and streets alongside Alfred Hair and Al Black. Maynor’s work is featured in the Smithsonian’s permanent collection https://nmaahc.si.edu/object/nmaahc_2014.185.8ab   He used a thick application of paint on his art, using pallet knife and linseed oil to add life to his paintings. He was inducted into the Florida Artists Hall of Fame in 2004 and was said to have reacted in a very humble manner to his increased celebrity in the late 90s and 2000s. John Maynor passed away at the age of 67 in 2016.
