Florida Highwaymen Featured Artist
Hezekiah Baker
Hezekiah Baker was born in 1940 in Savannah, GA. He was intrigued by art as a young man but didn’t see the potential financial benefit of it until he met Alfred Hair who convinced him to exchange painting portraits for painting landscapes and taught him how to sell paintings in the traditional Florida Highwaymen. He ended up often traveling alone to sell his paintings and was impressed with the money he was bringing in. As interests in landscape paintings decreased in the 1970s Hezekiah Baker ended up entering the real estate business and eventually opening a restaurant in Ft Pierce. It was Gary Moore, the man responsible for the resurgence of interest in the Highwaymen as a result of publishing a number of articles who accidentally stumbled into this restaurant and was introduced to the Highwaymen and their paintings. If it wasn’t for this chance discovery the Highwaymen could’ve never experienced the ultimate potential of their success. Hezekiah Baker passed away in 2007. |
